A Physicist was recently featured in the Sunday Times talking about growing top grade diamonds in the laboratory, that rivals most of the mined diamonds!
Diamonds are a giant covalent lattice of carbon atoms that form under immense pressure and temperatures. Volcanoes provide good conditions for natural diamonds to grow, and they usually grow in natural protrusions known as kimberlite.
In the lab, similar conditions can be replicated with electromagnetism.
